Modern-day America is still Great Society’s America but with a far more powerful federal bureaucracy. Since Johnson left the White House, not one of the pillars of his authoritarian building has been shaken by the administrations that followed him. Quite the contrary, the failures of Johnson’s wars has done nothing to undermine the faith of the politicians of both parties in the virtues of the all-powerful state.
