If you’re headed to Washington, D.C., to celebrate, you’ll want to be well-prepared to make the most of the inauguration and parade, even if you’re attending without tickets. The swearing-in ceremony, where President Trump will officially take the Oath of Office, will be held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol at noon. The National Mall area has big screens broadcasting the ceremony live, giving everyone a clear view of the historic proceedings. Arriving early is crucial; security is strict, and every person must go through a checkpoint. To speed up the process, avoid bringing large bags and keep personal items to a minimum. Dress warmly for the January weather, bring snacks and water, and remember that thousands of portable toilets will be set up near the Mall and at key spots around Metro stations.

After the swearing-in ceremony, the celebrations continue with the Presidential Inaugural Parade, which travels along Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House. This traditional parade allows the newly sworn-in president to greet the American people along the route, and it’s an event you won’t want to miss. The parade typically begins around 3 p.m., but if you’re hoping for a good view, plan to secure your spot well ahead of time. Many people line the streets hours early, so patience and planning will pay off.

If you’re looking for the best way to experience the parade, there are a few things to keep in mind. Viewing the parade from the sidewalk along Pennsylvania Avenue is free and open to the public. This is where most people will stand to watch, creating a lively, patriotic atmosphere as thousands gather to cheer on the new president. Bleacher seating along the route is limited and ticketed through the Presidential Inaugural Committee, but most people find that standing along the sidewalk provides a fantastic experience. To snag a good spot, try to arrive by late morning or early afternoon—crowds will grow as the afternoon progresses.

Getting around D.C. on Inauguration Day requires some planning, as the city will be packed with visitors. Many roads in the area will be closed for security purposes, making public transportation the most convenient option. The D.C. Metro is a popular way to get to the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, but it can be very crowded. Expect delays and give yourself extra time to reach your destination. Capital Bikeshare is also available for those who prefer biking, though you may need to park your bike outside secured areas. Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft will be limited due to security perimeters, so plan to walk or use the Metro to get as close as possible to the event areas.

Keep in mind that weather in January can be cold, and with the long hours outdoors, it’s best to dress in layers and bring a coat, gloves, and a hat. A portable phone charger is also a good idea since you’ll likely be snapping photos and staying in touch with others throughout the day. This year, as always, thousands of portable toilets will be set up along the National Mall and near Metro stations, so restrooms should be available, though you may have to wait in line.

Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C., is a one-of-a-kind experience, and celebrating President Trump’s return to office will surely be a day to remember.
