Editor's NOTE: At the request of Matt Podgorski, chairman of the Northwest Side GOP Club, we have removed the photo of him and Jeanne Ives that was originally posted and at his insistence, we have changed the headline to read "Northwest Side GOP Club picks Ives over Governor Rauner, 2 to 1"

Originally, the story posted earlier today had a photo captioned "Republicans from NW Cook Co endorsed Jeanne Ives (l) w NW Side GOP Chmn Matt Podgorski (r)" and the headline was "NW Cook County GOP picks Ives over Governor Rauner, 2 to 1"

CHICAGO – Republicans from northwest Cook County sent a strong message of disapproval to incumbent GOP Bruce Rauner Saturday. Those attending a candidate forum endorsed challenger State Rep. Jeanne Ives as the preferred GOP gubernatorial nominee in the upcoming March party primary.

The candidate forum and endorsement session allowed statewide and legislative candidates five minutes to highlight their platforms, issues and ideas for reforming Illinois, their press statement said.

UPDATE 2:49 PM 1/22/2018 : The Ives campaign lists the following GOP organization endorsements in addition to the NW Side GOP Club: Wheatland Township Republican Organization, Fremont Township Republican Organization, Republican Organization of Wheeling Township, Batavia Township Republican Organization, Wauconda Township Republican Organization, Republican Assembly of Lake County, and Tax Accountability (Taxpayers United of America).

Precinct Committeemen from the represented GOP organizations exercised a weighted vote of ten, while general dues-paying members had one vote. The weighted vote results were:

Jeanne Ives – 442 – 66.2%
Bruce Rauner – 226 – 33.8%

92 of the 135 members in good standing of the Northwest Side GOP Club cast their votes.

"Endorsing in the Governor's race was an especially difficult decision for the club, as we have tremendous respect for both candidates," the club statement said. "Both Governor Rauner and candidate Ives met with members at our club headquarters multiple times to discuss their ideas for reforming Illinois."

The Northwest Cook County GOP Candidate Forum was open to representatives from the Niles Township GOP, Evanston GOP, Republican Women of Park Ridge, Republicans of Elk Grove Township, Chicago Republican Party, New Trier Republican Organization, Republicans of Maine Township and the Northwest Side GOP Club.

GOP Committeemen from affiliated township organizations were recognized

The group said they pledged to support the winner of the primary, without reservation. Every member of the Northwest Side GOP Club was required to sign a pledge to support the winner of the March primary in order to cast their vote.

The group endorsed Republican candidate for attorney general Erika Harold with 93.5% of the vote over Gary Grasso at 6.5%.

The also endorsed all uncontested Republican candidates.

"Once the March primary is over, the Club will be ready to tackle the biggest problems that vex Chicago's Northwest Side by working to remove Mike Madigan, Robert Martwick, John Arena and John D’Amico from their respective offices," they said.

  1. WOW, Jeanne won the endorsement of:
Niles Township GOP, Evanston GOP, Republican Women of Park Ridge, Republicans of Elk Grove Township, Chicago Republican Party, New Trier Republican Organization, Republicans of Maine Township?
    impressive….

  2. Just to clarify, each organization joined together to host the forum. However, each organization voted separately – all of the groups have their own rules and by-laws to abide by in terms of who is permitted to vote and what threshold must be met to provide an endorsement. Republican Women of Park Ridge co-hosted the Forum but did not yet vote. Both Maine and Niles held caucuses but neither group met the threshold required to endorse in the Governor’s race.

  3. Wow, again, IR and it’s shameless, inaccurate reporting. Your headline is factually incorrect. The NW Cook County is not a group who endorses. It’s a group of Cook County Township organizations who come together to listen to candidates speak. Afterwards, each organization votes on who to endorse as an individual township organization, not as a collection of organizations. The Northwest Side GOP Club is a Club that represents 3 wards in NW Chicago. The Northwest Side GOP Club was the only group to endorse Ives after this event. All of the other townships either had no formal endorsement or endorsed Governor Rauner. I can’t tell if IR is purposely misreporting this or if this is sheer incompetence. Sad.

  4. Evanston Township is endorsing Bruce Rauner
So the actual score is NW GOP Ives, Evanston GOP Rauner, Maine Twp. Rauner won but did not reach the 60% required for an endorsement. So Maine Township: no endorsement. Niles like Maine did not have a.60% winner so Niles Township: No endorsement.
I’m. Not sure of New Trier but the multi Township endorsement session was far from a landslide for Jeanne.
By my count it’s 1 Ives, 1 Rauner, 2 no endorsement, and 2 pending (Elk Grove and New Trier)

  5. “I can’t tell if IR is purposely misreporting this or if this is sheer incompetence.”
A little of column A, a little of column B. IR is trying it’s best to gin up the narrative that there is a massive conservative revolt against Rauner/Ives would somehow win a general election.
“The Northwest Side GOP Club was the only group to endorse Ives after this event. All of the other townships either had no formal endorsement or endorsed Governor Rauner.”
Because they want to win and know what’s best for the GOP as a whole.

  6. The third paragraph states, “Precinct Committeemen from the represented GOP organizations exercised a weighted vote of ten, while general dues-paying members had one vote.” Cook Co. doesn’t have precinct committeemen. They have precinct captains.

  7. Well now i am really confused!!!
so she was not endrosed by those townships in the article? you can see how this is confusing.
I was told that Northfield Township GOP did endorse Rauner on saturday afternoon at their own event, is that correct?

  8. Thanks for that information, Mr. Garber.
What that means is that Ives is doing very well. For her candidacy to PREVENT Rauner from walking away easily with the Maine Township and the Niles Township GOP’s unquestioned backing means Ives is making progress.
That’s very good news! It really means she WON 3 of those endorsements . Hopefully the other two will show good GOP principles and refuse to bak Rauner as well.
    This is great!

  9. Cook County does not have precinct committeemen – only ward and township committeemen. Kathy Myalls of New Trier is hosting multiple events and her organization will not vote until February. Northfield already hosted an event, although I do not know what the outcome was. If you have questions, contact your GOP Committeeman or your GOP State Central Committeeman – not the media.

  10. Jeanne is virtually unknown outside of conservative activist circles. Like him or not Bruce is widely known.
It’s not an indictment of Jeanne, it’s just the way it is. Any State Rep. Is virtually unknown outside their District. It’s actually a sad commentary on the voters, that state government is so far off their radar.
That’s one of the reasons Madigan has run roughshod over the state for 40 years.
    Sad but true.
    /blair

  11. Anyone that reads IR is well aware that you’re a Raunerite, Stevie, so doesn’t it bother you in the least that your guy – an incumbent that spent MILLIONS to win in 2014 – is unable to garner the needed votes to win endorsement? Doesn’t that tell you that your guy has burned his supporters and they’re angry?
Why is that so difficult to see?

  12. Not surprising since you have been squarely in Rauner’s camp (as are many state jobholders). Since the Lieutenant Governor had to spend much of her allotted time apologizing for the the Governor’s signing H.B. 40 it is hardly surprising that the response from activists was a trifle muted.

  13. New Trier had billed it as an endorsement session until last week when it said it was rescheduling it to an unspecified date and location. Was that because they didn’t have enough votes for Bruce and Bruce has a check written for them so they can reopen their headquarters? (They closed up shop last year after Kathy and company were humiliated in the Township election.)

  14. Many of those groups didn’t endorse him the first time around. But when we won, everyone got behind him. Same thing will play out again. Considering Rauner has won in Cuba Township, Schaumburg Township, Evanston, Northfield, and likely will continue to win, I’m not concerned.
However, IR clearly likes click bait headlines trying to inflate support for a candidate that isn’t really there, while criticizing anyone who disagrees a RINO.

  15. If Evanston had an actual Republican organization with real, live precinct workers, it would know that the endorsement of paper organizations, like Mr. Blair’s, is of absolutely no electoral consequence.
When real organizations say, “they will support the nominee of the Republican party,” that means nothing either.
Liberal Republican State Rep. Elizabeth Coulson found that out (quite painfully.) Ostensibly, The Niles Twp. GOP organization was committed to support her. But since most of its precinct workers (and unlike EV, they had real pct. workers) were gun owners and/or Right to Life activists, not a single piece of Coulson’s literature left the HQ and went out to the voters.
The anti-gun and pro-abort Coulson lost.
Rauner can reasonably expect the same. The Chamber of Commerce elites have cash – but no precinct workers.

  16. They can’t have weighted votes for precinct captains in Evanston – because they have no precinct captains.
When Garber put his with his 3rd party GOP endorsed a candidate for mayor of Evanston – the candidate renounced Garber’s GOP endorsement.
The GOP is so despised there, that it would be the kiss of death. And there is no upside to taking an endorsement from a GOP organization, that can produce no votes.

  17. At the request of Matt Podgorski, chairman of the Northwest Side GOP Club, we have removed the photo of him and Jeanne Ives that was originally posted and at his insistence…
The man knows how to straddle the fence with the best of them!

  18. The GOP candidate forum on the Northwest side of Chicago was a great success today. Illinois GOP Gubernatorial candidate, Jeanne Ives, was the first speaker and she made her best speech yet! She knocked it out of the park and got an arousing and enthusiastic applause from the couple of hundred Republican Party dignitaries and activists who were in attendance! Jeanne Ives is a natural campaigner and talked to as many people as she could…Jeanne Ives signs, stickers, and buttons were everywhere! 🙂
Governor Bruce Rauner failed to show up and sent his Lt. Governor, Evelyn Sanguinetti, to speak on his behalf. She gave a valiant and apologetic speech when it came to the taxpayer-funded pro-abortion bill that Bruce Rauner supported and signed into law. She never brought up the Sanctuary State Policy now in effect that Bruce Rauner implemented. She got a lukewarm but respectful applause when she was done. It was hard to watch her struggle trying to gain support for a failed governor…the worst Republican Governor in America.

  19. Illinois is the frontlines against the Democrat liberals, progressives, socialists that aim to destroy our state and country…unfortunately, governor Bruce Rauner has abdicated his Republican leadership role in our state. A sad situation…fortunately there is a new standard bearer who has chosen to fight for that leadership role in our state, Jeanne Ives.

  20. For all you Jeanne Koolaid drinkers, I would like to remind you the “real” opinion polls, scientifically administered, show Rauner ahead, with Republican voters around 50% and her name reconnition around 10%.

  21. You are seriously delusional. The incumbent governor cannot attend Republican events and gatherings due to justifiable concerns about tough questions and hostile audience receptions. Seemingly safe GOP organizational meetings have to be postponed to allow the incumbent to whip the votes to avoid being embarrassed during endorsement sessions or to pay off enough to secure votes, but all is hunky dory in Raunerland. The YouTube spoof of Hitler and his aides in the bunker almost writes its own subtitles.

  22. What I found disturbing is how 33.2% of those who voted went for Rauner. It should have been 100% for Jeanne Ives instead of 66.2%. In that a comment was made that members respect both candidates, made me wonder about the makeup of the Republicans who belong to the organization. They surely aren’t conservative Republican if they are fine with tax payer abortions and approve of Illinois as a sanctuary state. After 4 years they should realize that Rauner is ineffective as a governor and not to be trusted. He was even written about as the worst Republican governor in this nation.
Shame on those who are still aligned with Rauner. I wonder what is in it for them to have voted in such a senseless way.

  23. 40 comments on a story: I guess the rumors that nobody reads Illinois are untrue. Actually I have people mention IR to me all the time. I call it the best source of conservative news in the Midwest. We should all support their effort.
For the record, I did not write this story or the headline. My understanding is the news release was used for the article, just reprinted. The editor added some of my photos as are used in many IR articles. I wish everybody had all this excitement about articles like this one Nancy Thorner and I wrote recently on the pro life movement.
    http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/01/thorner-weyermuller-life-becomes-focus-of-chicago-marches-clinic-protests-and-bills.html
This is another pretty good article I wrote about Barbara Byrd Bennett going to jail and stealing $20 million from CPS. This story got thousands of likes and views but only 2 comments. I’m more interested in public policy then elections. I still try to cover events as the MSM does little. I applaud Illinois Review for covering news that other outlets won’t. I encourage everybody to support this grass roots effort.,
    http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/08/weyermuller-chicago-schools-former-chief-barbara-byrd-bennett-goes-to-jail-.html
For the record, I am supporting Jeannie Ives in the March 20, 2018 primary. I supported Bruce Rauner 4 years ago and his whole time in office. I also plan to vote for the Republican nominee in November who ever it might be.
I also would like to see a debate with Ives and Rauner.,

  24. Clearly Rauner is frighten by Jeanne Ives. He is not a man. When he sent Lt. Governor, Evelyn Sanguinetti. Clearly Evelyn lost and Rauner was not present.
Do you think Rauner will go to the Unborn baby killing event in Chicago at 1200 W. Randolph. on Wednesday January 24, 2018. Starting around 5:30 PM? His values follow Mao, Cullerton and Madigan.

  25. You mean the one where Rauner did not endorse any of the Republican candidates, and wanted to keep Democrats on the township board?
Rauner talked a big game about eliminating layers of government, but when it came down to it, he didn’t raise a finger in his own township to help.

  26. You’re seriously comparing organizations not endorsing a first time candidate with organizations not endorsing a sitting governor? You are dangerously delusional.
All this proves is that Rauner is a horrible candidate with no chance of winning the general election. Ives or Pritzker will be the next governor.

  27. “Cook County does not have precinct committeemen…”
Explain this to the leaders of the Northwest Side Republican Club since they constantly refer to precinct workers as “committeemen.” It is confusing.

  28. What you really know about Jeanne? I have lived in the 42nd district for over 35 years and seen her rise from the political swamp of Milton township. If you meet her, like I have, you will find a person who was a graduate of west point, and left the service after serving the very minimum time required, (which was 5 years) with a rank of Captain. She took this expensive Westpoint education as an economics major and put it good use as a Tax preparer for a franchise chain. She has no depth, no real aplishments, (only got very very few bills in the state house passed) She only claim to fame is her shrill screams of ” How Rauner and Illinois suck” I don’t need her to tell me that. I am of the opinion that she is total unqualified to be governor and will just be puppet for Dan Profit.

  29. “I wonder what is in it for them to have voted in such a senseless way.”
Maybe because we believe Rauner is the best candidate? Maybe because he’s actually won a statewide race? Maybe because, unlike you, some Republicans accept that we can disagree in issues and still be Republicans?
Trump isn’t even a conservative. Yet you’ll blindly follow him off a cliff.

  30. It’s hard to read a comment from Garfield Goose. I’m amazed when people don’t use their real name when blogging,
I just heard that same talking point from a democrat about her lack of time in the military. Btw, two of her kids are in the military, I can’t soeak for Jeannie but she did start a family so perhaps that was part of her decision, I would not comment or criticize a woman whi leaves the work force to have a family.
I look forward to a debate between Ives and Rauner. I heard rumor that it could happen but who knows.
I recall Garfield Goise was just a puppet but I did enjoy him along with Bozo the clown on WGN.
On serious note I have asked Fran Eaton to not allow comments from people with fake names. I applaud the brave people who put their names on their comments like Blair, Carl, Char, Steve, Matt,, Joe, Carl, the the wonderful Nancy Thorner. Capital fax has all comments from people with fake names. I rarely look at that blog.,
Again, I’m supporting the Reoublican nominee in the general and will be voting Jeannie Ives in the primary.

  31. You are becoming a Johnny One Note Mark. We get it, you do politics for a living and therefore use your real name. Not all people work in such an industry. Want to bring discussion on these boards to a screeching halt? Use your suggestion.
I, for one, happen to appreciate Clint Westwood, Spense, The Observer, Joe, and others who follow in the tradition of the founding fathers by using pen names.

  32. My understanding is that Mark endangers his business when he publicly shares his name. He’s not a professional political hack – he’s a true believer with a lot of guts.
Don’t throw stones unless you know what you’re talking about Chase. This time you’re throwing them at a patriot that should be congratulated and thanked.

  33. I stand corrected on Mark’s non-income from politics but he should not be congratulated and thanked when he is becoming a broken record about using his real name when there are plenty of others on here with valid opinions who must use a pseudonym in order to escape political persecution.

  34. DISGRACEFUL…should JEANNE IVES request to debate Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner’s wife…since HE IS NOT IN CHARGE?
BTW…totally agree with Mark Weyermuller. Good to see real Americans with the cojones to speak their mind and not hide behind phony names.
I hate coming on here…don’t know why, but maybe it’s because I’m finally on the same side with former adversaries who opposed Bruce Rauner. Unfortunately there were no viable candidates that I could support in 2014. Now there is a great one in Jeanne Ives. She will defeat Bruce Rauner…no doubt in my mind. NONE.

  35. I don’t do politics for a living and certainly don’t have someones hand shoved up my ass typing this like you seem too.
Anyway I’ve noticed the Rauner bots using the same talking points Quinn’s flunkies did in the last Gubernatorial election cycle. No experience, no record, the same old bla, bla, bla, talking points.
How about telling the class what #BenidictBruce accomplished in his 4 year as Governor and why you think he deserves 4 more years.
I can give you plenty of reasons not to vote for this undocumented Democrat candidate that’s easy, what’s harder is to actually identity anything he’s done positive.

  36. Good point, Chase. Perhaps Mr. Weyermuller would also demand that only people who obsessively and egomaniacally publish their own photos be allowed to post comments here, too.
Perhaps Mr. Weyermuller would have demanded that King George III”s agents censor all letters to newspapers written by “Silence Dogood.”
    That was Benjamin Franklin’s pseudonym.

  37. If what your “understanding” regarding Weyermuller is accurate – then more power to him. But his argument is invalid — unless you agree that George Orwell and Mark Twain should have only been allowed to publish under their Christian names — Eric Blair and Samuel Clemens.
